My #1 Tip to Boost Your Immune System
I love to espouse the benefits of nourishing foods. Even though I’m a big fan of eating for health, there is one simple, non-food tip that has saved me more in healthcare expenses (monetary and psychological) than any other; vitamin C and Zinc. Like two peas in a pod, these best buddies act like superman to boost your immune system. Who doesn’t want superman on their side?
Here’s the deal; when my husband first got sick back in October of 2014 I was still waking up each night to feed our newest baby, along with taking care of the other 4 kids during the day (and night, if they needed me). I was tired.
Thankfully I was also eating the best that I ever have in my life. Even so, I knew that I couldn’t risk getting sick. There were too many people dependent on me. So, I began taking vitamin C and Zinc each day. I would take it for a week or two, then give myself a week break.
If anyone got the sniffles I immediately took some C and Zinc. Lo and behold, I have not been sick since beginning my C & Zinc regimen. I’ll get that sort of beginning-of-a-sore-throat thing that happens before a cold, but it never turns into a full blown ninja punch to the sinuses.
Could it just be a coincidence? Yep, totally. But guess what? There’s science to back up the claims that Zinc (and possibly vitamin C) can help boost your immune system and keep sickness at bay. Finally, a hippy remedy that I can back up with evidence!
Proof that Zinc (and Possibly Vitamin C) Helps With Colds
Studies on the effectiveness of zinc have revealed that this mineral can reduce both the duration and the frequency of colds. Researchers are reluctant to recommend Zinc, however, because of lack of study regarding dosage and potential side effects.
I feel comfortable using low doses of zinc in capsule form. You can study this mineral and make your own judgment call.
Research on vitamin C has been less conclusive, with a 2013 study entitled “Vitamin C for preventing and treating the common cold” finding that most people studied found no reduction in incidence or duration.
Physically demanding hobbies and careers (marathon running, subarctic military) did experience a noticeable therapeutic affect. Did they find that vitamin C works directly to boost your immune system? Not directly, except for physically demanding careers. The authors of this study concluded that;
Nevertheless, given the consistent effect of vitamin C on the duration and severity of colds in the regular supplementation studies, and the low cost and safety, it may be worthwhile for common cold patients to test on an individual basis whether therapeutic vitamin C is beneficial for them.
I don’t advocate going out and taking large doses of vitamin C & Zinc constantly to boost your immune system. The best thing you can do for yourself is to eat nourishing real foods that haven’t been manhandled, mushed, and morphed. Then, supplement with this vitamin and mineral if you feel it’s a good fit for your family.
